Sharing your gifts through the pain

Chadwick Boseman’s death affected the world! Was it his humble demeanor, gentle spirit, or his ability to command attention before opening his mouth? I continue to ponder that during his darkest hours of life, he never complained. He pressed on. I also reflect on what if Chadwick had the attitude many of us have about life’s conflicts? What if he quit making movies because he had cancer? We would have missed his gift. The genius of bringing characters to life on the big screen. Never experiencing Marshall, the Avengers, the end game, Black Panther, 21 bridges, the 5 Bloods and even his forthcoming movie Ma Rainy Black Bottom. All which were made between 2016-2019, at the pinnacle of his battle with colon cancer. Chadwick didn’t extinguish his light. His selflessness to continue using his talent through pain, allowed us to witness his great acting prowesses.

2020 has been a year of unpredictability. We faced pandemics, epidemics, riots, senseless killings and deaths of iconic people. In some way they all have impacted us. Don’t let life’s circumstances keep you from using your God given purpose or talents. Like Chadwick let us keep pressing forward. For each time we don’t allow our light to shine just think of how many people missed God’s blessing through us!  Chadwick Boseman sacrificed himself despite affliction. He used his gift to bless us all. So what is your excuse?

Everyday may not be perfect but the day always has purpose

This pandemic has altered the lives of people in various ways. No social engagement, working from home or not working at all. Whatever the case don’t lose faith and don’t lose hope. Everyday may not be perfect but the day always has purpose. Do something today to lift up someone who are really hurting.

Hidden Treasures

READ: Colossians 2:1-7

In whom are hid all treasures of wisdom and knowledge.  Colossians 2:3

The Bible's hidden treasures

The bible is a gold mine filled with spiritual treasures. For years many Christians only get small nuggets because they only skim the surface. They continue to live a life of spiritual poverty and ignorance. Their hearts starve for more but they never dig deeper to discover that God has plenty precious gems of wisdom and instruction in the bible.

The richest man

There was a man and his family who lived a modest life; wife children, home, and land. In their mind’s eye they were not getting the desires of their heart. Life’s circumstances hindered their ability to prosper. One day one of God’s prophets visited the family and told them “their hands were blessed, their land was blessed and they were rich with God’s blessings.” All this family had to do was just dig to find more riches than they could store! This family heard the word but only received it as a metaphor. For years they lived yet never receiving God’s treasures.

The day came when both the husband and wife were called to glory leaving all earthly possessions to the children. After laying the parents to rest the son walked his parent’s land and decided to meditate at the creek which ran behind the home. As he stood reminiscing a shiny object caught his eye. Pulling it from the water he discovered the shiny object was a gold nugget. The deeper the son dug more gold was found. There was not enough room in his storehouse to hold it all. The treasure God’s prophet spoke of was in the backyard of the man all along. All he had to do was search and dig.

God has equipped you

I’m sure you all smiled and probably said “that was a wonderful story but that is impossible.” Well my dear friends it is no different than millions of Christians who claim to believe God and the bible. They read the WORD, study the WORD, but never act upon the WORD, just as you read the story and believed it was partially true.

God equipped all his children with the tools to succeed and not fail. God’s word is transparent. There are no tricks or booby traps to trip us up; that is the work of the devil. If we walk in faith, believe God’s word as truth there is no way we can fail. Begin by studying God’s word; build a relationship with God by praying.

Call God out by reminding him of what he said though his holy word. God’s word cannot come back void. These steps will help you discover the hidden treasures you have missed!

Prayer

Most gracious Father,

Forgive me for doubting your word. Help me to grow in faith, trust in you and not my own understanding. Lead me and guide me. Help me to be in your will so I can discover the hidden treasures you have for me that I have missed. This is the day that you has made and I am rejoicing because I am glad to be in it. I have another opportunity to trust you, to walk in faith and get it right! Amen.

Empty jars of faith

Jars of faith
Read: 2 Kings 4:1-7

Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you Luke 6:38

A prophetic word in disaster

Envision facing a situation that is certain to have an adverse outcome.  You down to your last two hundred dollars, home lost in foreclosure, or church destroyed in a tornado. You receive a prophetic word from your pastor, or woman of God telling you to “collect jars.” Would you do it?

Spring of 2010 New Morning Baptist church, in Tallulah, Louisiana was destroyed by tornado. All spirits were crushed and no one believed the church could rise again. Except for Ms. Connie Harris and her one jar of faith, she believed the church could be rebuilt.

Believe God word in a crisis

When facing life’s crisis are you bold enough to do the unthinkable – believe in God’s word?

Elisha told the widow to do something far-fetched – “go ask your neighbors for empty jars and don’t ask for just a few.” What makes this story extraordinary is this woman’s faith to believe in Elisha and not question the assignment.

The widow filled jars with olive oil. The Bible does not say how many jars she gathered but what if she had a half hearted approach. Oppose to collecting 100 jars she got 50, 25, 10 or just one. If there was any doubt or little faith her blessings would have been cut short. The oil flowed until the jars ran out. The widow had enough oil to payoff her creditors and more than enough to live on for the rest of her life. From God’s word Elisha turned the widow’s small something into immeasurable blessings.

Empty Jars of faith

Ms. Connie Harris faced life’s devastation with an empty jar. She set out to collect money to rebuild New Morning Baptist Church – she had the faith like the widow. God will provide a solution in tragic situations. But we often question his word. “How is this going to work” why am I doing this oppose to something else?” The lack of faith edges God out. Blessings are often missed because people question and cannot see extraordinary outcome through carnal eyes.

What are your empty jars? What is God calling you to do despite the fact you don’t have the resources. Is God calling you to start a business, teach, preach, or help others? Whatever the calling get the jars and do it in the name of Jesus even when it don’t make sense.  God will provide a way to fill them just as he did for the widow.

Bountiful blessings

On October 7, 2012, Pastor Eddie Fountain preached his first sermon in a new sanctuary which was built out of empty jars of faith. Today, the jar Ms. Connie Harris used to collect money rest next to the pulpit as a reminder of what can happen when a person walk in faith. The congregation donates the money each time the jar is filled to a needy family. God’s blessings are endless.

Go, gather and place your jars where God has directed. Begin filling them in faith and watch God turn small blessings into bountiful provisions.  With faith the size of a mustard seed, believe just as Ms. Connie Harris and God will open the windows of heaven and pour out endless blessings.

Let us pray

Most gracious Father your love, grace, and blessings are endless. I will continue to praise, honor, and bless your holy name. Anoint my head with your Holy oil and may my cup overflow with your blessings. With all you give my I bless others. Allow others to see the goodness they possess and believe there is nothing to hard for you! This I pray in Jesus name. Amen.

God’s Report Card: Are you failing?

During our school days we were graded on our ability to retain learned lessons of academia. We trekked through the hallow halls of higher learning striving for the highest mark, and then matriculating into the workforce as adults where we are now graded on execution. For both school and work a matrix was given; school issued a syllabus while work is based on job responsibility and execution of a task. Equally, they make available some form of evaluation on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. By not meeting the minimum requirements the end result could be failure or job termination.

Some of us are the best at what we do, experts in our perspective occupations, and well knowledge in our profession: teachers, preachers, top executives, CEOs of successful companies, artist of every medium, or coaches. The question is who is learning from our knowledge? What are we doing to mentor and uplift others in our profession? Are we selfishly hording these traits for our own gratification or reaching back to share these skill sets with others? Stop and think for a moment, what if God had a report card or performance plan that He provided to us monthly quarterly or annually and we actually had an opportunity to review our appraisal. This assessment would be a pass or fail grade. It may be a surprise to many, there is a performance plan that God has provided for us yet we so often choose not to follow. God’s plan is for his children to utilize the skill sets, talents, and creativity that he so graciously gave us all to share with others.

Jesus’ parable of the talents Matt. 25: 14-30 states, “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, which called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. To one he gave five talents, another two, and another one, each according to his own ability.” In this story, talents represented money as well as attributes. The servant who was given one talent chose to do nothing with his gift since he did not receive as many as the other servants. Are you guilty of hording your talents or believe you have nothing to contribute to others? On the contrary, we all possess a skill set, trait, or personality that can be used to uplift our fellow man. Though it may appear that you have no talents, or traits of any kind, you do have the capability to be of assistance to others. By giving back to our fellow man, this becomes a way of glorifying and edifying God. Jesus told his disciples in Matt. 25: 31-45 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters, you did for me.’

I challenge us all, as talented as we are in our professions take time to edify God as well as educate others. So when the time comes for God to bestow us with our final grade of performance here on earth we don’t want to hear we failed but the sweet words from our Father in Heaven: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!
