Your words come from the heart

Read 15: 8-18

But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart and they defile a man. Matthew 15:18

Let no corrupt talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

The words you say

Do you understand the words that come from your mouth?  Do you ever listen to the words you speak to family, friends, and co-workers? Parents, do you think before you speak to your children?

  • “You are lazy”
  • “You are a failure”
  • “You are no good”
  • “You are just like your father”

Your words come from the heart

In today’s text Jesus reminds us that defilement comes from within. Your words come from the heart. It is not what we put in our mouth that defiles us it is what comes out! Sticks and stones may break your bones but words cut deep like a knife into the spirit.

This communication is twofold – what you speak to others as well as to self. Do you comprehend the word you speak about yourself?

  • “I am too fat”
  • “I am too skinny”
  • “My nose makes me look ugly”
  • “I don’t like the way that I look”

This language is spoken daily, intentionally and unintentionally.
And these words are powerful and they do have recourse – negative or positive, the bible tells us so.

Matthew 15:18-19 - …those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart defiles a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts…

Denied Destiny

Many years ago I worked with young man who had a thirst for knowledge. Based on conversation, a person could tell this young man was very intelligent  and he should have pursued his educational dreams. In my opinion, through our conversations, his destiny was cut short based on his childhood experiences.

Though his parent’s intentions were well it was the corrupt words spoken which caused this man to drop out of school.  “No matter what I did they never saw the best in me.”  It was defiled and harmful words which prompted the boy to give up – “Dummy, lazy, crazy, and stupid.” Followed by “might as well drop out of school you are not going to amount to nothing.” After years of verbal abuse the boy gave up.

Toxic words poison the mind

Family, words can be toxic. They can poison the mind; tear down self-esteem and confidence in a person.  I encourage you to start thinking before speaking especially in anger, a fit of rage, or when disciplining a loved one. Think before you speak and use words that are persuasive.

Think before you speak

When we verbalize negative words it tears down what God wants to build up! It destroys the Gifts that God has given, never allowing them to manifest. It negates God’s purpose.

Meditate today and think of times you have spoke negative towards a loved one, friend, or coworker. Seek forgiveness and become more aware of the words you speak. It is not what you put in your mouth that defiles a person it is what comes out – do you understand the words that are coming from my mouth…?

Prayer

Father God in Heaven,

Words I speak are manifested. They can encourage and uplift or defile and destroy.  Lord, help me to become more aware of the words I speak. May they be words of encouragement not negative words.  Expressions that will uplift not break down.  Rekindle the fire in my heart to see the goodness in everything and everyone. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart always be expectable in thy sight.  Amen.

The words we speak echo

 Read: Ecclesiastes 5:2-3

Whatsoever a man sow that shall he reap.  Galatians 6:7

Echoes

Do you remember as a child hearing your first echo?  The fascination of yelling hello and hearing the repeated sound was fun.  The echo returns to the sender what it hears. Paul told us of another type of “echo” when he said, whatsoever a man sow that shall he reap Galatians 6:7.

Harsh words hurt

Words we often speak or receive from family, friends, coworkers, and children can be harsh. They are sowed in the spirit and harvest hatred, anger, and quitters.  “You are just like your father, a failure, no good, an idiot.”  Those words reverberate like an echo stabbing and cutting the spirit deep.

Children also echo their parents, repeating what they hear by inflecting words of destruction – “You are ugly, fat, and no one likes me.”  The tongue is powerful. Our words, positive or negative, once spoken into the universe, there is recourse – they will return as an echo.

The tongue is fire

The bible tells us the tongue is fire; it is evil and can corrupt the whole body. So, it is imperative to guard our lips for what we speak, our words can ruin a person.  In anger, a fit of rage or when disciplining children people say damaging expressions. Once spoken the words echo in the recipient’s mind. Watch the words that you say.

Echoes can be destructive and hard to stop. They negate what God has in store for a person.  They tear down God’s temples – the person. Only God can end the negative noise and unless he does individuals will live in a perpetual hell.   God will heal and help change speech by using loving, encouraging, uplifting, and words of blessings.

As stewards of what God has given us authority over meditate on your conversations. If you have spoken harmful words repent seek forgiveness and rebuild confidence in those harmed. If that child are friend is an adult it is not too late to rekindle the fire which was smothered by harsh echoes.

Prayer

Eternal Father in Heaven, words I speak is manifested in the universe and the spirit. Your word states what a man sows he also shall reap. Help me to guard the words I say about myself as well as others.  May they be words to uplift, encourage, and bless. Rekindle the fire in my heart to see good in self and others and not bad. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your eyesight Amen.

Out of the mouth of babes: The cutest things they say

Children can say the cutest things that adults don’t forget. I am of the opinion that God’s little angels speak from the heart. Their words are sincere and genuine no matter how brutally honest they can be.

Jesus loves the little children; they are precious in his sight and from their praise God has established a stronghold around them.

Recently, I experienced a complement from a toddler about three or four years old. This child caught my attention from a far as I approached the store entrance: A happy tot dressed in a bright pink dress and two puffy pony tails skipping and singing while holding her grandmother’s hand. As the three of us approached I reached around to open door for the couple. As usual, I anticipated the typical dry thanks most women utter but to my surprise it was the youngster who blurted out a heartfelt thank you! Though the thank you was cordial it was her follow up remark that really resonated and made my day. This pint sized angel turned around and told me I really like your green shirt too! All customers passing by chimed in like a back up choir with their oohs and aahs; they too heard this little girl.

The disciples asked Jesus who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? His response was unless we change and become like little children, we will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in Jesus’ name welcomes me. It goes without saying; being child like is a challenge for most adults. We are set in our ways and see simple minded behavior as being childish. We often conceal our honesty; which one of you would dare to say anything remotely close to what this child said to me without being in fear or thinking someone was making a pass at you?

Let us gain knowledge from the children in our lives, learn to be humble, be honest, have a child like behavior and bring a bit a joy in someone’s life like this little girl expressed towards me. Though I may never see this little person again I will always cherish and rewind in my mind’s eye the look on her face when I told her THANK YOU! And I like your pink dress too!!!
